PRINCIPAL DESIGN ENGINEER IN WARWICKSHIRE

As Principal Design Engineer, you will report to the Chief Engineer and be primarily responsible for the lead design of mechanical components for use in air products/systems on commercial vehicles. This includes the utilization and delivery of all key design documentation/theory to develop robust and functional products within the scope of pre-defined specification and cost targets.

Principal Design Engineer Role:

Support/Lead departmental technical competency development, new technologies, techniques and processes.

In addition, for Sustain activities, you will be required to manage technical change to current production products. Inclusive of this is leading the theoretical design risk analysis for changes and deviations to requirements.

Contribute to a bridge building culture and act with 5C behaviour. Engage in results driven continuous improvements and purposeful application of Haldex Way.

Principal Design Engineer Duties & Responsibilities:

Lead the design of components and related assemblies to meet the appropriate product specification.
Using Company design process, supporting documentation and foundation.
Creation of robust theoretical analysis portfolios for all designs.
Support the development of the product from conception through to manufacture. This includes technical support for all Project functions.
Create, lead and approve the creation of 3D models along with associated and detailed 2D drawings to enable manufacture.
Utilise, assist and supervise calculations and design aids as appropriate to meet design specifications.
Meet cost and timing targets to enable a commercially viable product.
Communicate with external suppliers, the appropriate internal departments, and personnel to optimise manufacturability, cost and performance requirements.
Liaise with other departments e.g., Purchasing, Quality, Manufacturing and product management on a frequent basis.
Be a Technical expert for Mechatronics, supporting the Systems team in defining requirements.
Alongside the Design Release Engineer, be the Technical Lead for specification alignment.
Produce, lead, and approve specifications for components to include material, finish, etc.
Attend Project and Change meetings to provide technical leadership and guidance.
Support workload planning, including unplanned activities, to meet overall objectives for Projects and Change.
Self-motivated to work with minimal supervision.
Support the Chief Engineer in defining departmental training needs.
Perform job functions in accordance with set policies and procedures to ensure preservation of Company Quality Policy.
Support the Chief Engineer in resource management, competency alignment and performance levels of the group.
Technical/theoretical delivery of the Design phase for product development.
Technical support for Sustain activities, (where required):
Drawing Updates.
Technical risk assessments.
Deviation analysis.
Design documentation control using PLM system.
Deputise for the Chief Engineer when required.

Monitor and improve the performance of your work and processes you contribute to, addressing deviations or communicate need for support. You are expected and have authority to temporarily stop work or processes if safety, environment, or quality is at risk.

Principal Design Engineer Processes:

There will be a number of processes, activities and tasks that you will be responsible for/adherence to. These include but are not limited to:
Mechanical Design Handbook (guidelines).
Robustness Package/Scope of Works (This requirement documents the minimum suite of design documentation required for NPD delivery within Design scope).
Design responsible KPI targets.
Respective HPMM Design related requirements.
Respective Sustain Design related requirements.
Windchill Change Management process.

Principal Design Engineer Requirements:

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Proficient in the use of ProE/Creo CAD to produce 3D models and 2D drawings for components and assemblies utilising Windchill.
Good working knowledge of BS8888 and IATF 16949.
Working knowledge of design of pneumatic systems, plastic/rubber moulding, aluminium casting, pressings.
Working knowledge of APQP.
Use of Microsoft packages.
Ability to carry out design calculations.
Ability to use FE software to analyse component stress levels from 3D.
Ability to be creative and innovative in the design process.
Ability to solve problems and be self-motivated.
Ability to communicate at all levels, verbal, written and presentations.
Ability to work with others in a cross-discipline team of engineers.
Ability to use the full suite of Design documentation for safety critical product development (Mechanical).
Knowledge of pneumatic systems as they apply to truck and heavy trailers would be an advantage.
Working knowledge of 8D problem solving process.
Working knowledge of FMEA and DVP&R process.
Experience within a technical leadership role / Leadership experience.
