JOB DESCRIPTION

SENIOR SIMULATION ENGINEER IN WEST MIDLANDS

Location Type Salary
West Midlands Permanent £45k - £55k
  • Reference: 009212
  • Contact: Natalie Dass
  • Tel: 0121 230 1070

As Senior Simulation Engineer, you will be central to the design and development of new propulsion concepts. An agile, highly capable engineer is needed to implement an integrated simulation approach to address the electrical, thermal and mechanical design challenges of propulsion system and sub-systems such as battery, fuel cells, power electronics and electric motors. The role involves using a range of simulation tools to support the design and analysis of cooling systems, provide thermal management solutions or predict the performance of vehicle and sub-system (e.g., battery pack) through 1D simulation.

Senior Simulation Engineer Role:

Promote the System Engineering and Digital Twin approach for propulsion system engineering and enable continuous process improvement.
Perform 1D thermal simulation and provide thermodynamics analysis based on simulation result to support the design and development of client or internal R&D projects.
Produce accurate analysis for thermal management of propulsion system and sub-systems (e.g., battery, power electronics and electric motors) or xEV using hand calculations (Excel based) or 1D thermal simulation.
Build and calibrate the thermal models of propulsion system and sub-systems.
Responsible for propulsion system and components thermal performance requirements, product validation plans, and delivering validation tasks.
Use a range of simulation tools to build the vehicle or propulsion system models that can be used to predict performance, such vehicle energy/fuel consumption, EV range and battery heat rejection, or as plant models for MIL (Model-in-the-loop) and HIL (Hardware-in-the-loop) for Software team.
Manage and perform simulation (or co-simulation) to optimise powertrain components sizing and energy management strategies by using Design of Experiments (DoE) and optimisation.
Interpret vehicle level requirements into propulsion system and sub-system (e.g., battery, power electronics and electric motors) requirements using hand calculations (Excel based) or 1D simulation.
Improve propulsion system components (e.g., battery, power electronics and electric motors) and xEV modelling, simulation, and digital engineering toolchains.
Apply a system engineering approach, translating customer requirements into design use cases and sub-system targets.
Work closely with testing engineers to validate the design proposal and ensure the learning is cascaded into future models.
Create project documentation in line with company processes and standards.
Present analysis findings in technical reviews and make clear recommendations.
On site working at the Clients facilities may be required.

Senior Simulation Engineer Requirements:

A degree or similar qualification in an Engineering, Physics, or science-based subject that covers heat transfer and fluid dynamics with experience of simulation at an OEM or Tier 1.
Technical background or interest in thermodynamics, with some experience of analysis of thermal systems, ideally within the automotive industry.
Proven track record in propulsion systems and sub-systems modelling, simulation and analysis to quality targets and milestones.
Experience of simulation codes (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Modelica, Altair Activate, AMESIM etc) is essential.
Knowledge of xEV technologies, such as Batteries, Power Distribution Unit, Inverters and Motors, Vehicle powertrain, heating, charging and cooling systems.
A sound understanding of engineering, physics and applied mathematics and their application to solving real world problems.
A minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience.
Experience in automotive or other relevant high voltage systems design, development, and validation.
Familiarity with systems engineering processes from requirements capture through to design validation.
Self-motivated, creative, and adaptive team player.
Willingness to take on roles, responsibilities and challenges required to achieve company goals and objectives.
Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
Able to Prioritise and organize project workloads, schedules, and tasks.
Strong presentation, report writing and communication skills.

Desired:
Expertise in thermal management of xEV propulsion systems and battery systems.
Battery simulation experience, with a good understanding of xEV battery pack design, cell chemistries used, battery cooling system and BMS.
Experience in testing and compliance engineering to electric vehicle regulations and external standards.
Experienced in Model Based Systems Engineering.
Knowledge of DoE and optimisation tools and methods.
Knowledge of commercial 3D CFD tools (e.g., Altair Hyperworks).
Knowledge of HVAC system definition and development.

Applications:

PLEASE ONLY APPLY IF YOU HAVE AUTOMOTIVE EXPERIENCE.

This vacancy is only available to Candidates with relevant experience as detailed in the job description.
